For more than three decades, Steve Sorensen answered the call when Sooke needed him.
Now, he is ready to serve our community in a new way.
Steve is running for Sooke Council as part of Sooke Together, a team committed to responsible planning, public safety, respectful leadership and decisions that put the long term interests of our community first.
Meet Steve
A Lifetime of Service to Sooke
Steve joined the Sooke Fire Department as a volunteer in 1980 and went on to serve our community for 36 years, including as Sooke’s Fire Chief.
Throughout his career, Steve worked with residents, firefighters, neighbouring communities and every level of government. He helped strengthen emergency services, improve training, build regional partnerships and prepare Sooke for the challenges that come with a growing community.
Steve’s leadership was recognized with a BC Community Achievement Award. Sooke Fire Hall No. 2 was also renamed Sorensen Station in recognition of his decades of service.
Steve understands that good local government is built on preparation, teamwork and trust. It means listening carefully, understanding the facts, planning ahead and following through.
That is the approach he will bring to Sooke Council.
Why I’m Running
Sooke is growing, and we need to be ready.
We need roads, emergency services, health care, parks, trails and community facilities that keep pace with our population. We need thoughtful planning that protects the qualities people love about Sooke while creating opportunities for families, seniors, young people and local businesses.
We also need a council that works together, respects the expertise of municipal staff and makes responsible use of every tax dollar.
I am running because I believe my experience in emergency services, municipal operations and community leadership can help Sooke move forward with confidence.
I have spent much of my life preparing for difficult situations, bringing people together and making decisions when the stakes were high. I will bring that same steady and practical approach to council.
Steve’s Priorities
Steve will support emergency services and community preparedness. He will advocate for improved evacuation planning, safer roads, dependable emergency communications and strong partnerships with neighbouring communities and provincial agencies.
Steve will work to ensure that new development contributes to the roads, sidewalks, trails, drainage, parks and public services it requires. He supports implementing Sooke’s Official Community Plan and Transportation Master Plan through practical, achievable projects.
Steve supports continued advocacy for improved local health care, community gathering places and services that help seniors, youth, families and vulnerable residents. He will promote cooperation among the municipality, community organizations, service providers and other levels of government.
Steve supports a vibrant Town Centre, more opportunities for locally owned businesses and economic development that builds on Sooke’s strengths, including tourism, recreation, arts, agriculture, marine industries and community services.

I’m running for Council because of my deep roots in Sooke and my commitment to protecting and enhancing the character of our community for both longtime and newer residents. I moved to Sooke when my parents bought Sunny Shores in the 70’s. Before becoming a career firefighter, I ran Sorensen Construction after I earned my Red Seal in Carpentry from Camosun College. I raised my family here. I volunteer for Sooke Lions, Sooke Emergency Support Services, and Sooke Fine Arts.
